Steam gifts: why the buyer's account region matters

Updated

A Steam gift is tied to the region where it was bought. An account from another region will not accept it. For a seller this is the main cause of disputes over gifts: the goods are delivered, but the buyer did not get them.

Why it is so

Prices in Steam differ by region. So that gifts are not bought where it is cheaper and given where it is dearer, Steam does not let an account from another region accept a gift. A supplier buys a gift in a particular region, and it can reach only an account of that region.

How to sell gifts by region

If the buyer got the region wrong

The gift will not reach them. You can see it from the order's status at the supplier. What to do next — refund or reissue the gift to the right region — depends on the supplier: find out in advance what happens to a gift that is not accepted.

Regions and price

The purchase price of the same gift differs several times between regions. So work out the price of each region separately: the same price for every region means that in some you earn and in others you sell at a loss. It is easy to check in the price calculator.
